Wow... I'm a mezzophile, so don't take me too seriously on tenors. ;o)
Would vote for Franco Corelli for the Italian fach. The dude could sing anything and was a convincing actor, too. What a voice that was... even with his scooping! Jussi Bjoerling was also great, but he couldn't act. So on the radio he goes first, but when there's also seeing involved, I'd vote for Corelli. :o)
I'm very partial toward Wolfgang Windgassen for the German fach... but must admit to not having heard much of Melchior's and Slezak's recordings.
Nowadays, tho... probably... Domingo and Florez?

I am a bit of a Wunderlich fan, but Bjoerling, Gedda, young Pavarotti....I know a ton to choose from. I really do like Florez now, though haven't had the chance to see him live yet.
