I was just wondering, what do others prefer... singers who sing the music cleanly as written and little else (a la Tebaldo, Sumi Jo, etc), or singers who go for interpretation even at the expense of beauty (a la Callas, Rysanek, Kasarova)?

I personally look for singers who provide great musicianship and beautiful artistic interpretation....in many ways both go hand-in-hand. That being said, I am a big Wunderlich fan, but he wasn't always the most accurate singer...but very rarely made an ugly sound.
