» Smorg - Opera Etiquette at your first opera!

In response to Opera Etiquette at your first opera! posted by brycethetenor:

hoho.. I wish someone told me before going to my first opera not to have a big meal/drink a lot before hand... ;o) The lines to the loos are rivaled in length only by the lines to the Disney World rides!

Also... don't clap before the music ends! If (and very likely) no-one follows your lead, it's .... awkward.

Don't yell 'Brava' at the tenor!!!

And.. the great acoustic in the auditorium means that not only can you hear others... they can hear you as well (no matter how softly you think you're chewing on the macademia nuts)....

And talking about nuts. They tend to cause you to ..er... smell... after a while. Can you imagine sitting packed like canned sardines surrounded by glittering people who smell like they've had some trouble properly digesting a bucket of macademia nuts with the intermission still a good 30 min away? Perfumes aren't all that better, for that matter.
